Four Key Signs that the Return of Christ May be Very Near

by Adrian Isaacs

We can safely say that our generation is witnessing developments in the world that are remarkable, if not staggering with respect to Bible prophecy. Here are four quick signs that suggest to us that Christ’s return may be very, very near.

The Nation of Israel
Many passages in the Bible suggest a significant Jewish presence in the land of Israel at the end time (Matthew 24:15-21; Daniel 9:27; Ezekiel 37). Since the Jews were scattered from their homeland for centuries following the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 by the Romans, many of these prophecies seemed to require a certain restoration of the Jews to their land in order to be fulfilled. In 1948, the State of Israel was reborn, apparently setting the stage for the fulfillment of many of these prophecies.

The Need for Middle East Peace
Interestingly, the event that starts the Tribulation period – the final seven years prior to Jesus’ return – is the confirming of a covenant between “many” (which seems, according to the context, to include many of the Jews) and the coming Roman prince, identified by many as the Antichrist (Daniel 9:27). It is of great interest that Israel has been involved in peace negotiations and peace treaties for decades. Even now, the international community – lead by the United States, the U.N., and Europe – has been searching for that elusive peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians. Just what form this “covenant” will take remains to be seen.

The Reunification of Europe
The Bible reveals that the world power to govern the earth in the days immediately prior to Jesus’ return will be the Roman Empire (Daniel 2 & 7; Revelation 13, 17). Of course, the Roman Empire fell apart centuries ago. However, beginning around 1951, certain nations in Europe began to form closer alliances, a process that ultimately led to today’s European Union, a 28 nation political and economic bloc that occupies significant portions of what once made up the Roman Empire. Today the EU has its on flag, anthem, and currency (for some members).

Christian Apostasy
This sign is perhaps of greater relevance to the church in Europe and North America. One of the sad trends that seem to be prevalent in the West today is a drifting away from the sound doctrine of divine Scripture. How often is the Second Coming even taught, let alone watched for? Why do we so often hear the Word of God debated and unbelievingly questioned rather than proclaimed? If one listens carefully, they will be able to detect a subtle tone of compromise by some professed Christians with the beliefs and claims of other religions and spiritualities that is less eager to declare the Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation – no exceptions! Could these trends be a foreshadowing of the coming apostasy noted in 2 Thessalonians 2:3? Time will tell. Might the drifting from sound doctrine be what Paul warned about in 2 Timothy 3:16-4:4? Maybe!

We are living in interesting times. Please feel welcomed to share your thoughts on this, and let us know what you think regarding the signs of end-time Bible Prophecy.
