Getting Even

Getting Even

Do you ever want to get back at someone for hurting you or thought about it? We have all had a thought or two of getting even with someone that has hurt us. But does that make it right? I believe it does not and we need to not allow a negative spirit to enter our minds. The Bible says “the battle is the Lord not ours” 2 Chronicles 20:15(NIV).  The battles we face daily belong to the Lord. We can fight in the prayer room for those who hurt us.

They are many examples that have been provided for us in the Bible of individuals who wanted pay back for something that was wrongfully done to them. Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers, went through many challenges because he told them that they would later bow down to him.  Later on he was major person that provided economic stability for the world. His brothers came back for food and had to go through his command. (Genesis chp.37, 50). He could have easily planned for revenge for what his brothers did to him but he welcomed them and supplied the food they need to survive because he loved them.

This is how God wants us to treat people who hurt us. Not with vengeance, but with a From death to life© Africa Studio - Fotolia.comheart of forgiveness. Matthew 6:14-15 says For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” It may be some time before you grasp this but you have to allow the spirit of forgiveness to reign in your heart and not revenge.

I too experienced times when I wanted to hurt the individuals that hurt me. But what I realized that it hurt me more to hold on to those things. But in time I realized that as I treated them with kindness it helped me to let go.  Unforgiveness hurts you more than the person that you are harbouring unforgiveness towards.

We may be human and experience a lot of emotion regarding how people treat us. Society calls it “karma”. Jesus does not operate on karma.  We are to pray for those who use and abuse us. This is what Jesus did on the cross. He asked His Heavenly Father to forgive them because they did not know what they were doing.  What an example to follow!

Are you in a situation where you are tempted to get back at someone? Please allow the word of God to minister to you that you may pray for those who mistreat you. In time these individuals will realize their wrongs and ask for your forgiveness towards them.
